How to play, step by step
- Set up the tables. Split into tables of four — head table, middle table, low table. Partner with the person across from you.
- Round one targets 1s. The round number is the target number. Round one, you are rolling for 1s.
- Roll three dice. Each die matching the target number scores one point. Score at least one and you roll again; score nothing and the dice pass left.
- Three of a kind. Three of the target number is a Bunco — 21 points, shout it, and the round ends immediately.
- Three of any other kind. Worth 5 points, and you keep rolling.
- End the round at 21. The head table ends the round when a team reaches 21 or scores a Bunco. Winners move up a table, losers move down, partners swap.
- Play all six rounds. Rounds run 1 through 6. Tally wins, losses and Buncos on a scorecard for the final prizes.
Points per roll
| Each die matching the round number | 1 point each |
| Three of the round number (Bunco) | 21 points, round ends |
| Three of any other number | 5 points, keep rolling |
| No dice matching | 0 — pass the dice left |
Table rotation is the whole structure
Winners at each table move up toward the head table; losers move down. Partners change every round, so by the end everyone has played with and against most of the room. That rotation is the actual point of Bunco — the dice are just an excuse.
Running a Bunco night
- You need a bell at the head table. Only the head table ends a round.
- Print scorecards with columns for wins, losses and Buncos before people arrive.
- Traditional prizes: most wins, most Buncos, most losses, and last Bunco of the night.
- Twelve players is the classic count, but any multiple of four works fine.
Odds of a Bunco
Three specific matching dice is 1 in 216 per roll — about 0.46%. Across a full night of six rounds and many rolls per round, a typical table sees a handful. That rarity is why it is worth 21 points and its own prize category.
Common variants
- Mini-Bunco for 8 players across two tables.
- Progressive prizes where the Bunco pot rolls over between rounds.
- Themed rounds where the target number carries a house forfeit.
